Gratitude is a superpower!
There is no doubt that we have all had varying experiences of being told as children to be “thankful for what you have.” The question is, have we ever really paid close enough attention to the impact it can have over our mindset and truly appreciating its power?
Saturday the 21st of September, 2019 is world gratitude day. Mirrored Horizons saw this as the perfect opportunity to explore the power of gratitude and how it has helped shape our business to date.
As human beings, we are generally always on the crusade to become the greatest versions or expressions of ourselves. We don’t however, seem to acknowledge that our potential biggest road blocks to achieving life’s elusive feeling of being “content” can be sabotaged by yours truly- OURSELVES!
Practising gratitude can help you to remove your own ego, and start looking through a lens of “we” rather than “me”. It can empower you to essentially get out of your own way!
We have embraced the power of gratitude and even directed its practices into business life. One of our cultural principles is “We Appreciate. We show gratitude for what we have and are thankful for the differences in people’s background, experiences and opinions.” This little reminder has infiltrated our routines to ensure gratitude is practised regularly to manifest what we are looking to create.
Co-Founder Julia has extended Mirrored Horizons’ business practice into the family home, creating a dinner table conversation centred around teaching her two children the power of gratitude. Often starting the conversation with “Today Mum is grateful for…” she explores.
Why do we see gratitude as holding superpower qualities? It has the potential, if committed to, to transform your mindset from victim-hood to a mindset of acknowledging your incremental success factors and looking forward to your ongoing future potential!
For so long we were on a roundabout full of negatives. The environment we found ourselves in created a snowball effect that stifled our ability to think clearly. An egocentric environment where appreciation was destitute. What was learnt? You can only control the controllable. The controllable being how we thought and responded to the environment we found ourselves in.
Once our thoughts changed from focussing on the negatives to what positives the experiences were providing us; resilience, ability to perform under pressure, people management and so the list goes on, the ability to begin to focus on what our solution looked like flowed naturally. Our solution? Create a business that provided individuals and businesses the insight and tools to embrace who they are, live for purpose and be courageously authentic.
The power of gratitude managed to take us out of an environment that was stifling our potential. We began to share our positive energy and what we were newly grateful for which ended up attracting like minded people. Like attracts like after all.
We’re not saying we don’t have days where things are hard but with the struggles, we now have the ability to look for the silver lining. Over time we have taught ourselves to look for opportunity in obstacles.
For something to change in your life, one of two things have to happen, either your life changes, or you do. For us, we changed and so too have our lives as a result. The continued commitment to practising gratitude in our lives ironically has us appreciating gratitude and all that it has provided us on our journey to date. Thankful, for being thankful!
